Summer 2026 is close, and the first properly hot week is when every aircon in Port Stephens gets switched on at once. That’s also when the phones run hot with breakdowns. A few quick checks now, and a service if it’s due, means your system is ready before the rush and not stuck waiting for a tech in the middle of a heatwave.
Here’s the five-minute checklist we give our customers around Nelson Bay, Port Stephens and the Hunter every spring.
1. Clean or replace the filters
Dirty filters choke airflow, cut cooling power and push your power bill up. Pop the front cover, slide the filters out and give them a rinse. If they’re torn or still grubby after a clean, replace them.
2. Check the outdoor unit for salt and debris
Living near the coast means salt, sand and leaves build up on outdoor units over winter. Clear anything sitting around the unit and gently hose the fins (power off first). Salt left on the coil speeds up corrosion, which is one of the main reasons coastal systems fail early.
3. Run it now, not on the first 35 degree day
Switch the system on in cooling mode for 15 minutes. Check it blows properly cold air, the remote and thermostat respond, and there are no new noises, smells or drips. If something’s off, you’ve got time to get it fixed before everyone else calls.
4. Book a professional service if it’s been a year

5. Think about upgrading before demand peaks
